I know this may sound absurd but... why is it so hard to find friends my age (19) that are more like me? Everyone I hang out with smokes (not just cigarettes either), drinks, and is always in a bad mood. I've always wanted to throw a dinner party but I know they'll end up arriving stoned. I just find it difficult to surround myself with (dare I say) more sophisticated friends. Am I being conceited or is it a reasonable wish?

It is the most reasonable wish ever. You are a rare and refined kind of person and you ought to maintain your attitude and personality and NEVER succumb to other influences no matter what you hear about being "introverted" or "conceited". "Take me as I am, because I'm proud of myself" ought to be your motto. Believe me that these punks will have a good laugh at themselves when they grow older and recollect their idiotic idiosyncrasies. Keep clean, and God bless.

You certainly have a good mindset and therefore a valid wish but you see, there are only a few teens like you. Those who do not smoke, those who are eager to learn not just fit in, those who are in for decent activities, those who will be a good influence and make a difference....most will find them even absurd and kill joy...but you can find most of them actively participating in school and/or church programs, in the library, volunteering for a good cause etc.
If I may add, you do not need sophisticated friends you need friends who would be a good influence in terms of you and them being able to enjoy your youth without compromising the learning you can get from life and the joy of having true friends who will be there for keeps.....

I am the same way, I like wine, and talking... I don't hate the world, and leave the drama at home. If I were to say this to any of the people I know, even the older ones, they would have no idea what I am talking about. So I am not the only young person that wants to throw a dinner part??

not everyone smokes and drinks.....but why not try hanging in places like art galleries or join a book club to find "sophisticated people"

i am 19 and know how you feel all my friends were exactly the same. but they aren't anymore cos i found a new group of friends. although i miss all my old friends i am very happy to be away and out of the whole scene.
