I have answered to a similar question few minutes ago.
It is pretty obvious you are referring to Materazzi / Zidane episode.
I really would like to help most of the people to UNDERSTAND what is happening in most of the soccer fields around the world.
What MOST of the people do not understand, the alleged phrase Materazzi have said (about the sister), it is a typical Italian (vulgar) expression on retaliating over a provocation. That sentence is often said during verbal argumentation between two people, independently from the knowledge of the person background or from the provocation.
And Zidane knows that very well, because he played in Italy for few years. His reaction is not justifiable. Materazzi is a "dirty" player, and no one justifies him neither. BUT in the contest of the episode of the World Cup Final, he did nothing else that what everyone else do when playing soccer (when it counts).
So, the answer to your question is YES, of course they do!
It is not exactly "part of the game" but it is a common recurrence. And that happens in many team sports where there is competition and players comes often in contact with each other. Some examples: basketball, American football, rugby, water polo, hockey...

A player will be sent off and shown the red card if he: uses offensive, insulting or abusive language. Although this is taken to mean the referee, it in fact, also refers to an opponent or own team-mate. If a player insults another which in the opnion of the referee constitutes abusive language, he can be dismissed. However usually, the referee takes into account the 'heat of the moment'. But if the abuse continues after being so warned, the player will be dismissed. If the abuse was directed at the referee, almost certainly he will be dismissed in the first instance. In this context, calling a referee a 'cheat' is deemed insulting.

yes, but not to the extent that American Football players etc do. Lately in the UK Chelsea, and Arsenal have been doing all the trash talking regarding William Gallas and Ashley Cole.

Any game that requires physical contact usually includes trash talking. It's a fact of life.

When I was a kid my coaches taught me to always try to provoke the opponents I had to mark, referees always tolerate funny provocation not insults. I bet it's still the same now.

I've never had my sister or mother insulted, but lots of stuff on the way the other guy is playing like, "Nice shot, maybe next time you can put it on goal," that sort of thing.

sometimes they do... although it makes them lack any sports spirit...
if the referee catch them saying that... they get a warning (or sometimes a yellow card)... but, if they where trash talking him, they get the red card & its the end of the game 2 them!
