an algorithm is a way to ALWAYS solve a certain problem, and to find all available solutions.
of course, algorithms are used in computer science, but we all use algorithms in every day life: finding a solution to how to get from place A to place B is part of developing an algorithm.
An algorithm is described by two laws: 1) it needs to have an end: meaning that after going through its steps, you need to actually finish the task you were supposed to accomplish. and 2) it needs to cover all aspects of the situation involved in the problem.
the second aspect implies that when creating an algorithm you need to have an analytical mind, as to be able to identify all possible situations, and cover them all by the algorithm.
