I hope the rules don't become as draconian as they are here in the U.S.
Lot of places ignore them here. Good. And I don't smoke.
Who is the State or any other organized entity to tell someone that people cannot smoke inside an establishment owned by that person?
Such laws violate property rights. If you don't like the smoke - go somewhere else.

I'm from California, and since I was younger there was a law that banned smoking indoors. It was soooo nice, because when you went out to eat you didn't have to worry about other peoples smoke traveling to your side of the restaraunt. When I was in South Africa, even when I would sit in the non-smoking portion of a place like Spur (which why I was a Spur is another story completely!) whenever the waiters would open the door the smell of smoke would be overpowering, even when we sat on the opposite side of the restaraunt! So I think that the rules could definitely be stricter in South Africa, because places like California prove that it can be done, and it's unfortunate to those that don't smoke having to inhale all the secondhand smoke in public buildings. They have rights too, so it's important to find that happy medium, and I believe that no smoking indoors is a great way to do that, because it doesn't encroach upon freedoms outside, and doesn't forbid smokers from smoking.

New legislations for smoking designed to tighten up cutting-edge loop-holes is being deliberate in South Africa with a invoice drafted via the well-being Ministry finding to limit smoking exterior interior of a prescribed distance from a window, ventilation outlet, doorway or front to a public place.

Hi Kim,
I think the rules/law is ok enough even though I have come accross restaurants that don't have separate, blocked off places for smokers. There is a new law in the pipeline for stricter policies, but I agree with Porgie that we rather need more policemen to combat REAL crime than smokers that don't obey the law. But sometimes it is difficult for me an asthma sufferer with breathing in smoke at places...

I think the smoking in South Africa is fine the way it is. Non-smokers have got more freedom than smokers.

Is it even possible to ban smoking in public places? I'm a language practitioner and public places refers to a place where everyone has the right to be. That includes any street or sidewalk. Does that mean you won't be able to smoke in front of your house...on the sidewalk? Because that's almost impossible to police. If that means we'll be getting more police officers to patrol the streets, I'm all for it. But if it means we'll be getting the current police force to do that, I'm afraid SA is going to lose the war against real crime! I think the laws should stay as they are for time being. No need in passing laws we can't police when there is much bigger fish to fry in our beloved country!

Im a smoker.... and i find that the rule's are just fine... its not like in the "olden days" when you could smoke just where you wanted to, like the movies and in malls for example... like it is now.... its fine. its a good way to keep the peace.. and if you talking about a bar environment, if they stop smokers in pubs... they will go bankcrupt... So ya, its good like it is...

No aint...they aren't s strict..they are actually not hard enough..only if they could be harder..we're at greater risk as passive smokers..they should be made a province of their own..the 10th 1..
