Sarah... come on... seriously? Their are two dominant political parties!!! YOU have two choices... TWO!!! If George Bush, Bill Clinton, Bush Senior, Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter, had claimed no political party affiliation, they never would have had a chance in hell of becoming president in this country.

OK... don't get me wrong! I think my first add made my opinion on the subject clear, and I'm asking this question in search of a reasonable opinion that opposed my own. But... This question is NOT ridiculous. Calling my question ridiculous without ever having recieved a best answer IS ridiculous.

OK from what I have figured out is that people like to be put into categories. Rep., Dem., Independent, blah blah blah. The United States is the ONLY country that has only a few political parties most countries have many more. I do not understand why there are only 2 here in the US. considering the IQ of our "general public" and how many people don't watch the news if you had more than 2 or three parties you would be confused and if there were no political parties no one would tell those who don't care the blatant lies that they will fall for and eventually vote for so they could ***** and COMPLAIN later. People in the US like to be TOLD what to do and do not question enough and just go on NOT caring about anything except themselves. If it was just "the government" what would you do? knowing that you had no way of getting yourself heard or voting for someone who cared about the same things you cared about? there are 2 sides to everything so I suppose that's why we have 2 but if we had none it would just be the govt and that doesn't incorporate the average citizens idea of "choice". Plus most people like to watch the bitching and complaining from both sides and who's lying about what and so on even though they do not care it's like a soap opera to some.
Don't get me wrong I absolutely love my country but man they do things the super hard way.

This is a ridiculous question. There will always be political parties. If there were no parties, it would mean everyone had the same opinions (and then there'd be one party) or everyone was apathetic and had no political opinions.
Ned B is an idiot who wants everyone brainwashed.
Thank God for CashCobra.
Look, your question was what would the American government be like with NO political parties. To ask what the American government would be like without the 2-party system is a completely different and legitimate question. If you want that answered, make your question better.
And I am very sorry that none or my answers has ever been deemed "best" by idiots who don't even know how to ask questions.
And I'm also sorry that I'm normal. Which means I communicate in a normal way, I say what I mean, and I am able to form questions which will elicit a discussion about a subject I wish to discuss.
I love cookies, thank you.

I believe we'd be much better off. As it is now, only the two candidates from the two parties are given any media coverage. A party puts all of its eggs in one basket, hoping that the candidate they've chosen....from all the the possible candidates from those parties is the winning candidate.
Personally, I think it's a crock. So often, a given candidate only has a few of the traits and/or beliefs that are important to you. But, you're left choosing the lesser of two evils. Unless, of course, you're big into partisan politics and always vote for the candidate from your political party. Meanwhile, there are so many qualified, hard working people who represent everything you find good and true to the values of our society. Yet, they are overlooked because they do not entirely fit into the mold of one of the two parties.

We would live under a dictator. We would loose our freedom of speech. We could dance in the street among the dictators pictures and statues and sneak around hoping our best friend or brother wasn't an informant. A lot of yahoo Answer participants would be charged with treason for speaking out against our government. Maybe some would take the chance of getting on a boat to find refuge in another country. Maybe we would have the a pillory post and be exposed to public scorn. Who knows some may have their head lopped off or hung by a rope while the town gathered around and had a picnic.

Much better. People would actually have to know what the individual believes in rather than simply voting on a party line. I do not believe that the majority of people who vote understand anything but the general beliefs of the party they vote for.

A brilliant question! We would be sooo much better off. We Americans must love each other and stick together because all politicians from both sides are corrupt and are working toward the new world order.

you mean if the people were actually able to vote on a candidate that they want instead of the parties picking someone that will serve their purposes and sticking them against the "bad 'liberal'/'conservative' other party guy"
A world better than we are right now.
This would allow people to vote on the person that they want in office (whether presidential, mayor, representative, congress) for the qualities that the person posesses, not just voting on them because of what the party says that its stance on issues are.

If I am understanding these responses some of you seem to think that we would be better off if like minded people did not work together to advance their ideas?
