It doesn't matter where you live in this country. A credit check today involves giving someone your SSN#. Of course, you don't have to give anybody the #, but creditors (like landlords) reserve the right to refuse anyone who won't submit for a credit check. If you're concerned about identity theft or credit problems, you should probably get a copy of your credit report for yourself and keep an eye on it for a while.

one does need to give prospective landlords you ss # so they can run a credit check on you

Anyone or organization who you authorize to check your credit must have that number. That number however, is is very private, be careful who you give it to.

yes you do need to give it to them it is the only way that they can check your credit and see if you have any violatons with previous landlords.

On my SS card it says "For Social Security and tax purposes - not for identification." That law has been bent until it broke, I guess...
