As a graphic designer myself (and an old skool Illustrator/Commercial Artist), you'll get more work as one, but the pay is pennies to the dollar. CGI the pay can be more than even a project manager, but to break into that business is very difficult (and be ready to learn serious advanced mathematics -- beyond Calculus, as high maths are required when plotting 3D vectors and light points [with game animation that will be DirectX <-- learn everything you can about it, and the advanced tools 3dsMax and especially Maya]).
If you don't have any problems relocating to a major city; very good in advanced math; can work long "crunch" hours in a boiler room atmosphere -- CGI or game design is the way. If you want to stay home; live a "normal" life (family, friends, have a pet) -- graphic design is a sure bet.
CGI/Game design the risks of losing a job is greater (company can go belly up quick). Graphic design, your skills are totally portable and you will never be "fired" if you work solo.
The choice is all between what time and effort you want to put into the career, and what workload you are willing to handle.

You will find that both are so intertwined that it would be foolish to limit yourself to only one of them. It may sound like a lot, but try doing both - graphic design will give you a good understanding of the aesthetic principles which underlie both, and computer animation will become part of graphic design as a profession more and more. People ae already expecting you to know how to handle Image Ready or Flash if you are a graphic designer. Don't you go believing that the two can be held apart for much longer.

Graphic Design will give you the basic knowledge of composition, color theory, typography etc which can be applied to any field of visual communications and with that knowledge is easier to succeed as an animator than the other way around. Computer Animation is a very specialized field.

I'd decide what end career you want and what work environment is ideal for you. I'd worked in graphic design for 10 years (consumer products, packaging, advertising) and enjoyed the work most of the time but got tired of the fast, unrealistic deadlines, frustrating clients, and overall shift from creative driven design to marketing driven design. I've found computer animation (I've worked in internet animation and recently started in video games) to be much a much more enjoyable field.

graphic design. You might not always want to be in the field of Computer animation. Graphic Design is a broad spectrum career and can help you get your foot in the door for a lot of oppertunities.

I would lean toward computer animation between the two. It seems graphic design may be incorporated into computer animation.
