I need to buy a cell phone for the time i will be in US(3 weeks) and take it back to India. So I need a GSM phone and thinking about going for a prepaid plan for the 3 weeks I will be here. What is the best way to go about it? I saw the Tmobile and cingular prepaid plans which come with a phone(costs around $100) and they seem to be pretty okay but I am not sure if they would unlock the phone for me once i am done with their service. Or is it better to purchase a phone on Ebay and get the prepaid thru Tmobile for one of these?

Please advice.

I would try the Prepaid net10 a subsidiary of tracfone inc. with all calls 10 cent minute in and out and a half a minute per text message you can find their phones at Walmart, Kmart, Shopko, Rite Aid, and Walgreens. Or you can go with an even simpler plan called Jump Mobile Prepaid (the prepaid arm of CricKet mobile Inc.) all out bound calls $0.10 a minute all text messages are free incoming and out going plus all inbound calls are no charge to your airtime pool

in case you do not use your telephone a lot you would possibly want to pop out ahead with a prepaid account. you want to envision on the expiration on the playing cards/minutes for the plan. a number of them have one of those short expiration(30 days) it finally ends up being like a plan that you would possibly want to save continuous service.
