I've always liked hand-drawn illustration, but I've seen some very impressive vector stuff lately. It's a matter of choosing a style suited to one's subject matter, however; some subjects are best illustrated with that very clean, computer-y look.

It depends on the results you want to achieve and the final output (is it going to be displayed on a computer screen? paper? TV?). Vectors will give you clean sharp colors, lines and forms. Hand drawn illustration can be more organic. The texture of the surface and the texture of the medium can combine in complex ways creating effects impossible (or utterly impractical) to duplicate on a computer.
A good illustrator or artist should understand the capabilities and be able to feel comfortable using either media.

This depends on your application. If you are using an illustration to define something, go vector graphic. But if the output is your product, go hand drawing. I prefer neither per se - but I like it when my illustrations in manuals are done in Illustrator, and I enjoy a hand-drawn image if it has an artsy purpose. Maybe look at it this way: Vector is something for hard edge, hand is for emotion.

Hand drawn. It shows the true skill of an artist who can truly design 2D artwork with actual 3D objects.
Vector art has it's purpose -- especially in Flash design and computer graphics, but for quality illustrations, it's technical pens, inks, illustration board, squares, French curves, and even pica rulers. Especially if you're doing post up or prepress artwork for 4 color processing (lithography).

Hi,
I draw vector and by hand although I am more than likely only draw nature and people by hand and vector is a requirement for my computer art.
I actually prefer what I draw on the computer as not a natural at art but I enjoy it and that is the biggest requirement for any artist-to enjoy it
