You need a wireless card. The three most common types are the internal card (inside your laptop), for the PCI slot (usually on the side of your laptop), or for the USB port (along the back/spine of the laptop).
The USB is the most cost effective (as low as $20), but it is the most vulnerable, and prone to damage.
Depending how often you need wireless access, you should look into one that fits your needs.

If you're not lucky enough to have one built in, you'll need a special "802.11" radio card that plugs into the slot on the side, or one that plugs into a USB port. Once you install the software that comes with the card you can use it to sign on to wireless access points. Some are open to the public, most need a password for security. When you connect, your computer will treat it like a regular network connection, and you'll usually get to the Internet at the same speed as a DSL or cable modem depending on where you connect.

Of the top of my head I would say that 'this adapter crap' is probably a wireless adapter PCMCIA card or something like that. Buy one, plug it in, reboot Windows and it should auto-magically find any nearby wireless receiver and connect you up. If it doesn't, don't ask me, I don't use Winblows.
