Normal food is fine. As long as it is nutritionally sound.

First and foremost do not eat for two. A balanced diet for one would be sufficient enough. Whatever is healthy for you when not pregnant is advisable when pregnant. You should eat a good balance of proteins, carbohydrates and fibre, fats, vitamins and minerals. Do not go on a slimming diet and make sure to include plenty of fruit, veg, water and milk. You need extra Iron, Folic Acid and Calcium. Your obstetrician will probably prescribe Iron/Folate tablets to suppliment your diet.

What you should avoid would be:

offal like liver and kidneys
caffeine
alcohol
unpasteurized milk and cheese made from such milk
artificial sweeteners and diet drinks (sources of phenylalanine)
smoking (not food but still...)

It would also be best to avoid too much sugary stuff because gestational diabetes is very common and it would be wise to try and prevent it.

You may have cravings but remember, do not eat what you wouldn't give a newborn baby, I'm sure you wouldn't dream of giving a newborn child a shot of Vodka, so don't drink it yourself while pregnant.

That said, good luck, take care of yourself and enjoy your pregnancy!

Anything that is processed is fine. Any soft cheeses can give a pregnant woman an infection like bleu cheese or feta. Up to two cups of coffee or equivalent caffeine has shown not to harm the fetus but does deplete calcium. No shellfish as said earlier but also no canned tuna or farm raised fish as it has too much mercury. The best thing to eat prego is fresh foods. I never heard deli meats were bad.

This might actually be a good time to reward yourself with some pristine foods which will greatly aid your baby's healthy development. Why not see your pregnancy as a time to restore your own health why giving your child the best possible foundation for its physical life? My advice to you would be to go for organic foods, reduce animal protein a lot, and derive your proteins from pulses and the amino acids naturally occurring in raw veggies (and yes, they are all in there - to make it better still, try adding sprouts and shoots, and every once in a while, have crushed grains that have been soaked in spring water over night - superior source of B-vitamins!). Cut down on highly allergenic stuff like milk, go for cream and butter instaed (strange , huh? But they actually don't have animal proteins in them enough to cause allergic reactions either in you or in the child). Overall, keep it fresh and organic with lots of good, native oils and absolutely no processed foods.

Any thing you want, this is your time to gain a little weight and not be ashamed of it. I ate so much and enjoyed the he!! out of it. But one thing don't eat alot of spicey food gives bad heartburn, I know i had it bad when I ate spicey foods. Eat fruit, veggies, a big fat greasy cheeseburger, with a nice salad.
