Without being mean and condeming like some have been on here, answering a very genuine question, if your concern is so much so that you ask this, I would consider not smoking near the baby. Depending on the degree of your habit, I would defineately consider cutting back. If your going to smoke, just be considerate, you have a choice, the baby does not. I should not harm the baby, although there is a possibility that he/she maybe allergic, I would not jump off the deep end, but I would curb the habit in the presence of the baby and the parents out of respect.

Well, yes. the smell is from the carbon dioxide in the cigarette. yes, it is extremely harmful to their health in the future if you smoke near any baby, and all the chemical smells that the cig passed on to your clothes might be harmful too. think of it this way, anybody with allergy problems who smells ammonia ( a chemical found in cig.) is gonna have some kind of negative allergic reaction, even if the smell is quite faint. just remember that a persons health starts at birth, and depending on how he's been raised healthwise, he might turn out ok or unwell.

I don't think any studies have been done on this, so any answer is merely an opinion. However, I would be very surprised if it couldn't. I was asthmatic growing up, and my dad smoked. Being around him COULD trigger an asthma attack, so there has to be some exchange of particles. Considering just how bad 2nd hand smoke has been shown to be, especially for infants, I would think that it could be harmful.

Nicotine penetrates your clothes and skin, and if you smoke in your car it stays in the seats-or so the studies say- I don't remember where I read this but I know I did. Personally, I think as long as you wash your hands (which we should do anyway!!) and don't smoke around the baby it's fine. But i could be wrong.

bah, imagine rearing a child in a sterile environment. now imagine taking the child out for a walk in the real world at some later date. imagine the impact. look, don't smoke around the child. be real nice and don't smoke in the same room. i have some great friends, they both smoke... in the garage. i think that's cool.

Nope the smell haves nothing to do with it. As long as he is not there breathing it in while you are smoking he will be fine. However the kid is bond to inhale second-hand smoke often during his lifetime.

Highly unlikely, unless he is allergic. However, you might consider simply not smoking when you know you're going to be around him. It's better all around for everyone, especially you.
