I usually enjoyed taking public transportation when I lived in the city. There's nothing like having the driver deal with traffic while I sit back and read. I may have felt differently if I had been doing my commute during rush hour but for swing shift it was great. I haven't been able to drive for a couple years now due to disability and people act like I'm a leper because I don't have a car. (My disability is not obvious to a casual observer.) I think it is more about independence than materialism. No one likes to have to borrow or rent a bigger truck even if you only use it a few times a year. Americans are raised to be self-reliant and that is a good thing even if we get carried away once in a while. Even now that I can't drive, I'd rather take the bus than get a ride with a neighbor who passes by my work at the same time the bus does because I don't want to be beholden or see myself as too helpless to manage my own transportation. It's awful enough not to really be a real American any more now that I have no wheels.

This is an excellent question. I have been saying for years, that there is nothing wrong with public transportation. In fact I have know of some people who have their cars and will not drive them until the weekend or at night when they have to go out for personal concerns. My cousins in Chicago, who have since passed away, used to have their cars that they would keep in their garages until Sunday when they went to church, but for everything else they did, they took the El or they were on buses, or if it was to the neighborhood store, walked. I still to this day will sometimes take the city bus, to save gas, especially now with gas prices being what they are. If we REALLY wanted to send a message to the Arab world, we would ride the buses again, carpool, like they did in the 70's and cut our fuel consumption down by 3/4 and see what happens. Of course not everybody can do that, due to living in rural areas, or due to the nature of the work (like an outside sales rep), but most of us lazy a**es could walk to a bus stop and ride it sometime. It don't make you look poor, and if you are searching for a love, and the woman won't even look at you because you are stepping on or off a city bus, do you really NEED her?

What does all of that have to do with Southerners? I'm Southern and I have one car and everyone I know of only has one car. If they have 4-5 cars per household, I guess it's just because they can afford it. That's not limited to Southerners by the way. Don't be so stereotypical.

I'm southern also and the 2 people able to drive in my house has one. Now a better question is why do southerners have so many firearms per household. I have:
1 bolt action rifle
1 semi auto rifle
2 semi auto .45 pistols
2 9mm semi auto pistols
1 10mm semi auto pistol
1 .44 mag revolver
1 .357 mag revolver
1 12 ga pump shotgun
1 semi auto shotgun
each with its own purpose.
But I do disagree with luxury car parked in front of a low income house. which is prevelent in the south.

maybe becasue there are 4-5 people living in the household and they live in the country (you gotta get around some way) and maybe public transportation is not an option for them, its not like there is going to be a bus stop in the middle of no where.

because as opposed to big city dwellers who if they even own an auto it has to be kept inside a singular building or in a large multi story garage-thus having more than one is not practical, where as people who live in traditional homes have the room to have several. And its not just in the south its throughout the world that way.{this answers you in bold query},now for why people donot want to settle for being on the low rung of the ladder thats ez they have a good mind, and I know of noone in the upper class that is desiring to be poor.

Hound dogs know how to drive in the South. If you see 4 or 5 cars on the property, that means they probably have 4 or 5 hounds. In fact, dogs often teach humans how to drive in Dixie. Cats show them how to use a toilet, cows show them how to chew their food, and chickens show them how to have sex.
