First, take a look at what's on your hard drive. There are probably many old files that can be deleted. If you have tons of pictures or videos, you might want to burn them to a DVD or CD, instead of storing them on your hard drive.
Also, open Control Panel, go to Add or Remove Programs and remove any old programs that you don't use anymore.
If you still don't recover much disk space, you will need a second hard drive.
Despite what a previous poster said, DO NOT reformat your hard drive. You will lose everything on it unless you back up everything first.

If what you have done doesn't release enough space, archive some of your files to CDs or DVDs or delete the files or programs you know longer want. You could also turn on compression to generate more space on you drive but that would slow you down. I would suggest buying an internal HD. You can get a 200 GB drive for under $200. The installation is not difficult as the drives come with detailed instructions. However, if you don't feel comfortable installing it yourself, computer stores will install for a nominal fee.

i would suggest that you do not format your drive. I am assuming you are using windows XP.
if you go the C:\windows and unhide the hidden folders you will have files that are named between $ and $ ($NtUninstallKB873333$) you can delete this files, this files are created when you update windows and they are to remove the updates, most likely you will not remove any updates from your PC, in addition you should delete all your temp files C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp if you are still low in space, you can right click on my computer and select property's and system restore. and turn off system restore, restart your PC and turn it back on, restart your PC. this will delete old system restore files. make sure you empty your recycle bin and defrag your drive.

My laptop did this to me even after I did the disk cleanup and it just kept shutting down I took it to a repair shop and had to buy more ram or memory something like that it was about $36.00
I think it was a new hard drive.

first see how many drives u hav, in the harddisk, windows reserves some hard disk space as virtual memory... it may be consuming space and its kept as a file pagefile.sys in Windows XP and some other name in windows 98.. in the drive... we will not be able to c it normally (its hidden, system file).. run disk checking utility scandisk also... may be some error in file system...

go to search files and see if this file exists....>> "winzip_temp" if it is there , (it is a virus file that copies itself on all the empty space on the computer) dont foget to change the folder settings to "show all files" the hidden files should be shown.
if this file is present , (plenty it will be) then the best thing is format the system once.
FORMATTING IT ONCE IS THE BEST SOLUTION
geting another hard drive si not the solution

don't "format yer hard disk" that just erases everything on it
delete stuff you don't need
compress stuff
copy stuff to at least 3 CDs or DVDs
buy a bigger disk or another disk (external works great).

You should start deleting unecessary items on your hard drive, because that is whats taking up all your space. You probably didn't have much to clean, but you may have too much on the drive.
