I'm in a guitar class now and want to practice at home. Oh, and I have a few other questions for all the guitar players who have been playing for a long time: exactly how callused will your fingers get after playing for a certain amount of time? And is there a way to help prevent it? (Because I've been playing for a couple weeks and it still hurts....)

Try pawn shops for some great deals!

I wouldn't trust pawn shops. The ones over in southern California rip you off for reallly reallly cheap (also crappy) guitars. If you must buy one from a pawn shop, try researching on it first before buying. It's rare that you'll get that lucky.

Since you are beginning, I would find a local guitar store like Guitar Center and get a $100 Epiphone. Guitar Center had reallly good deals especially during labor day. Those $100 Epiphones went down to $50. I have also seen a regular priced $50 guitar but wouldn't count on it. So yea try finding a new $100 Epiphone. Then if you stick to guitar playing for a long time, buy a better one like an Ovation or Taylor (which I realllllly love).

Another alternative is to find a friend that doesn't care for their guitar and buy it off them. I'm pretty sure you have some friends who went through some guitar phase and played for just 1 month only to give up. lol. I got plenty of those kinds of friends.

As for your calluse question, when I played, it took me about 2 months for my finger to have a normal layer of skin even if I played everyday for 3 hours. But before that, it always appeared cracked, which was nasty. You don't want to prevent the calluse, because it's a good thing. You will adapt to it and it won't be a problem later on.

Hope I helped you!

You cannot get a good guitar for cheap. You can get a decent playing Epiphone or a Yamaha for a couple hundred dollars at guitar center or musicians friend. I've been playing since 1974. The callouses will form after a few weeks. They don't get very big, your finger tips just kinda toughen up. If they hurt a lot, try a little ice on them and give them a rest. Soaking your finger tips in salt water will help toughen them up too.

Good luck with your class. It was hard for me to learn initially, but it has brought me decades of pleasure and joy. It will be worth the pain and effort once you get over the hump.

Play a lot, the calluses will develop. Think of the pain in a positive light... that you're improving. :)
Guitars can be found at little music stores in small cities. Don't know where you live, but if you live near a little city or big city... try looking in the phone book for local music stores. Don't go through a chain... they usually run more expensive. Fender makes a pretty good acoustic guitar pack for the young guitarist or amateur. Fashionable colors, too! :)
Good luck!

Musician Friend -on Line
Guitar Center -walk in

If you get a "Classical Guitar" with Nylon Strings they are much easier on the fingers. Electrics with extra light strings are easier. Also tuning down will relieve some of the force it takes.

If your gonna buy a guitar, buy a decent one. especially when it comes to acoustic. classical guitars might be better for beginners who don't want their fingers to hurt or that want to actually play classical music, but steel string guitars (the most common) is better for playing any other style but classical. on the link i sent you there is a list of acoustic guitars for beginners for the most part within the price range of 35 to 200 Dollars. personally, i think that if your gonna get a guitar, get a good one. not 1/2 size, get a full sized guitar. :) hope this helps!

Freecycle is an online group of people who give away their unneeded stuff, anything from furniture to building materials.

I suggest you join a group in your area and post a notice re the guitar which you want. Someone will hook you up.
