Sometimes yes. Especially someone who is medicated for depression. people are afraid that the depression or whatever caused the depression is going to rub off on them somehow. They are also afraid that if they talk to a depressed person, they mite find out the real reason for their depression and it mite be the most horrid thing they have ever heard of, so they really don't want to know and have to deal with it, so they just don't talk to the person they know or think they know is depressed. It is a crock of crap, but none the less a fact of life.

They don't understand. People are always strange when confronted with something they don't understand.
Especially because of what wizard said. You can't tell a depressed person to 'snap out of it' or 'things aren't that bad' The truth is things ARE that bad. It's the same symptoms of losing a loved one or being fired from a job only the reasons are physiological instead of physical. You would never tell someone at a funeral or the unemployment office to snap out it or things aren't that bad. Well, it has the same effect to someone who is really suffering from depression. Saying things like that will only cause them to avoid you b/c it's clear that you don't understand.

Personally, I am not afraid of depressed people--it's just that I don't want to have to deal with it. Someitmes we can be selfish and tell ourselves "Let him/her deal with it...it's her problem, not mine". There's actually nothing to be afraid of. You just have to naturally be a loving-caring person to know how to handle a person with depression. It also depends on what kind of depression you are referring to. Medical depression or just simple and normal sadness? If it's a medical depression, it's treatable with medication and it comes with symptoms like fatigue, sleepiness, loss of hunger and loss of concentration.
