This is a period of heavy immigration, although not as heavy as the period after it.

In the period 1820-1860, the largest group of immigrants to the USA was the Irish, particularly because of the Potato Famine.

In your overall period, the largest group was probably the Germans.

Most immigrants to the USA in the period you mention came from Western Europe, but this period also saw lots of Chinese immigrating to the USA; they mainly came from south China and spoke Cantonese.

By the way, there were no restrictions on immigration then; and immigrant men generally could vote upon arrival if they were considered "white." The first laws restricitng immigration were passed against Chinese immigration. Naturalization laws arose in the period 1877, for reasons I won't go into here. Immigrant exclusion laws and quotas were 20th century innovations.
