Whole blood (unclotted) blood is pipetted into a specially marked tube that measures the rate of erythrocyte sedimentation. Whole blood will seperate as it sits, and the erythrocytes will settle to the bottom of the tube while the plasma remains at the top.

ESR -- erythrocyte sedimentation rate is the rate at which red blood cells settle out in a tube of unclotted blood, expressed in millimeters per hour.
It is a simple blood test.

an esr test is done by taking a sample of your blood. its as simple as that and they only need to take about 5-6 mils of it. so no need to worry.
