As soon as he or she is able to work (14-16 in most places), have a reliable ride to work (parents count), is able to take care of huge amounts of money, and can juggle all of a job, schoolwork and funtime.

Before they get to college, just make sure they undertand how hard it is to work. I wouldn't physically make them go until after they get out of college, or while in college (if it's not going to be too much for them). Just b/c they are 14 or 16 or 18 doesn't mean they should have to get a job. I have never heard an elderly person say, "If only I'd worked at McDonald's or started mowing lawns 3 years sooner, maybe, just maybe, I could have made something of my life."

In some families very young and still go to school full time in some they never have to work as teens. But in this family we all started at sixteen to earn and learn how to manage money pay for what we needed, and how to always save some money in the Bank ,on payday for a rainy day.. but in these times can you send your teens to work with out having problems with the rules we have to live by now a days.I don't know I have no teens.

i think the question has too many angles, i wish i had more job experience, all my friends had jobs in high school, but i was so focused on my studies i don't think i could have kept my gpa up. not to mention the fact that you have to spend the rest of your life working, why not let your kids enjoy themselves while they are still in school? parents forget how stressful it is to be a kid, adding a job into the mix is just asking for trouble. granted some kids can pull it off, but it just depends on the kid. why rush the inevitable?
