How do I get a possible employer to take my military experience seriously? I think the fact I served should count for something, even if my what I did has nothing to do with the posisiton I am trying to get.

There are several transferable skills you can glean from whatever you did in the military. Your goal is to match as many of those as you can with the job requirements you are applying for. This website can give you more info as well as military-frinedly employers and even mentors who are vets that now work for each company.

I don't know what employer you're considering but all the places that I've applied take military experience very highly.

any aerospace or defense contractor would give you preferential treatment. And if you have a government security clearance then you have it made. Just put it on the resume.
