There are other solutions to this problem besides the polar bear one, consider that he is in such a distance from the south pole that, by walking south 1 mile, brings him to a point in a circle centered at the pole with a cicumference of 1 mile, by walking west he would go around the pole and end in the same position, so going north 1 mile would bring him to the starting point again.

There are even other possible smaller circles around the pole that would bring him to the same position after several turns, their circumferences would all take the form 1/n where n is a positive integer.

So, in this case, he could not be a polar bear at all, or maybe a tourist bear, visiting south pole.

Here's an even better one: How many more times will I be able to read this same, silly-α$$ question before I put on a pink bunny suit and head for the nearest crowded shopping mall with an Uzi and several thousand rounds of ammo? ☺
