So Americans have the freedom of choice to be lazy and apathetic? Ah, so that is the "American Way" that Superman talks about.

If we made voting mandatory, the right man might win for a change.

I love Australians! They have some of the best ideas going! Most all Americans know that our so-called democracy is the most ineffectual, powerless, wannabee republic there is in the history of modern democracies. Americans don't vote because they know it doesn't work. It's a lot of trouble for nothing. Money elects, or more correctly, appoints, America's leaders. The unwritten rule here is, "He who raises the most money, wins!" No one even bothers to believe that votes are actually still counted! Americans care very deeply about many issues, both close to home and far away! But here, if you make too much noise, or p!ss off the wrong people, you get arrested and your life becomes worthless. "It is a terrible thing to live in fear..."

In the USA, we have a little something called freedom of choice. If we want to vote, we do, if not, then we don't. I believe that if you force people to vote, you might not get a true vote because many people might really be on the fence about two or more candidates. Just so they satisfy the law, they pick the first name they see. Thats no way to make a vote.

Not a bad point, after all Australia is a democracy, so then why are people 'forced' to vote?

Looking at the 2004 election something like 120 million (approx) people were recorded in the popular vote, so the argument about people NOT turning up if they are allowed to choose is incorrect.

How many Aussies so you think would turn up given a choice?

Forcing people to vote is completely undemocratic and false.

Not voting is a vote, its a vote for "none of the above." That should always be allowed in a true democracy.

(I'm not that sure that the philosophical ramblings of "Superman" actually qualify as relevant to the real world......)
