The question is hard to answer as it's a bit vague. At what level and to what extent do you mean? The State should provide some free education to everybody, because it is in everybody's interest that everyone have some basic level of education. But it shouldn't necessarily provide free education at all levels to just anybody over unlimited number of years.

i grew up in North Dakota. when I went to school we didn't have anything like the fees that they now have in the state i live in now and its absolutely frustrating. I now have 4 kids (ranging 5-14) all together the book fees alone are boardering 600 bucks. thats not including the other things that are extras. but no matter what there is no "Free" education. if a state were to cover the costs, they would have to raise taxes and we would still all be paying.

Are we talking College? I think we provide a free ride in education, books, rent, living expenses, insurance the whole package, if your from another country. You can come here and go for free But, here in the USA it is hard to get help in that area. You have to get grants and loans and of course work 5 jobs. (lol)

The state benefits from higher educated citizens. So although the education is free it will be paid for in higher taxes from better paid educated citizens. ETC.

With the Bush administration spending $50 BILLION a month on a stupid Vietnam-esqe Iraq war, I think our US Government should divert the ill spent $$$$$ and offer free education to both elementary, high schools AND colleges to everyone in every state.

It works in Europe. People get paid to go to college there. However, the students take a placement test at a younger age and the stupid ones, regardless of wealth, are told they are going vo tech, no university in store for them, suck it up. Americans, especially these days, couldn't handle the truth.

Not necessarily free but they could subsidise the costs a lot more.
