I understand that people don't want products, etc. I also understand that people get tired of people they DO NOT do business with calling their houses, however, I am just doing my job, trying to support my family, and I never badger anyone, is it really necessary to be so rude when someone is polite to you? I don't care if you get the product or program or not, but can you at least not CURSE at me. :) I feel better already.

In the area I live, I have a choice, telemarketing, factory work, or McDonalds, The company that I work for only calls customers that they already have, not new people they want to "sign up" A respectful job? Does it matter if it is respectful or not as long as I am working as a single mother to support my childen? I could be on welfare

Is it necessary to be so rude as to phone them? Particularly when, as you say, you don't care if they buy what you're selling?

People have the right, when they are paying for their telephone equipment and service, to have a reasonable expectation of privacy. They have a phone so that they can make and receive calls to and from people with whom they WANT to communicate. Phoning people that you do not know is no different from sending out SPAM. It unsolicited communication in large amounts. It is the absolute epitome of ignorance, and you should not be surprised if you are told where to go and how to get there. I find it astounding that someone who earns a living disturbing other people has the nerve to take exception to their responses.

Because some people might happen to be in a bad, impatient mood or busy at the moment when the phone rings and an impersonal, polished voice says, "Hi. Would you like to...", etc., etc. Look, I understand your being offended by some of the ruder responses, and that you are a human being, just like the person on the other end of the line, etc., but some people are just short-tempered and don't want to deal with that every day. And no offense, but I'm sure a lot of people don't view telemarketing as a proper, purposeful occupation, but rather one that just requires you to constantly pester people at home who have heard the same thing a million times and aren't interested. I mean...when does anyone actually buy the product? Telemarketing is like a reflection of our cold corporate society, very systematic and impersonal but carefully polite and somewhat deferent to the consumer.

Frankly it's because telemarketing calls come at the times when people will be home, but that's usually the time when people DON'T want to be annoyed with such trivial stuff.

#2, there're so many of them hawking the same stuff, it's easy to go into overload and just not want to be bothered.

#3 most working people DON'T accept telemarketing as a real and legitimate job - if you want respect, get a respectable job.

#4 Because they can.

Now, for all of you who haven't heard this yet, when a telemarketer calls, be nice and say; "would you please hold on a moment..."

And then put the phone down and walk away. In a minute or 2 the telemarketer will figure it out and hang up.

It works GREAT!

PS:

Funny how I got the ONLY thumbs down, I must have really gotten under the single slag's skin. But hey!! Stop using your kid(s) as an excuse for keeping such a despicable job. Wake up! even McDonalds would be better.

Telemarketing is an invasion of privacy.!!!!!!!

If I wanted them to call my house I would give them my phone number, just as I do my friends ,kids schools, doctors etc.

I have never brought one single product a telemarker was offering ,dont think many other people have. So I dont really understand how they make their money.

For those people working at these places ,I'm sure you could find a more respectable job somewhere else. Where you wouldnt sit on you backside all day getting abused.

Ps - when a telemarketr rings asking for the man of the house I give the phone to my 3 yr old son. He then earbashes them til they decide to hang up. Good tip for mums who are trying to prepare dinner.

90% of the telemarketing business use a auto dialing system and call across time zones. So the agent does not even hand dial the number so he/she does not know what time it is exactly before he/or she dials until the customer picks up the phone. Plus people eat at all sorts of different times.

---Edited--- The company I worked for only worked on a refferal basis so it does not call random form phone books or buy/sell numbers, but the company found a way to run in a semi-way to help the community so we were aloud to call anyone refferd to us even if they were on the do not call list just because of this loophole.

Telemarketers are highly undeserving of the public's trust, because so many scammers have ran the "job" into the ground as seedy way to make fast $$$$. I know because four guys are serving 17 years flat a piece in prison for trying to telemarket scam me. One got stabbed and died his first month in the pen: no pity from me....ah, well.

And what percentage of "legit" telemarketers are out there represent seedy semi-legit "businesses" that are none better...just on the fast scramble for a dollar.

Really now....are there ANY telemarketers who can take "NO" for an answer???? I hate telemarketers who hear "NO" and fast-badger around the answer with another pitch.

Get it straight: NO MEANS EXACTLY THAT.....NO!!!!!

But I signed up on the NO Telemarketer list, good for a couple of years.

Some telemarketers ask me for a new deal on a rental car insurance coverage. After I said no, thanks, she told me that she didn't see the point of me saying no to the deal. And she would repeat it everytime I decline the deal.

Then I had a news offer which I declined. They would leave me along an call back a week later. That continued about 2 months.

I had one company called me during night times around 9pm. And since I used to have rehersals, so I missed their calls. My roommate one day told them to call me in the morning. So guess what? They call me 6:30 in the morning. After I told him that I was sleeping, he continued to ask me questions about vacation deals. So I hung up.

AT&T used to call me for phone company transferring. They called me once, and I told them that I didn't want anything from them. They then proceeded to change my phone company anyway.

I even had one lady who was calling me in regards of a drug company. She told me to do a phone survey that would take about 2 minutes. So, I said ok, I would try. She asked me the first 6 questions regarding drug policies and companies. I had no idea how to answer any of them. So she told me to just pick one that sounds right to me. So after ten minutes, we were still doing the survey, and I still couldn't answer one question. So I said to her: "sory lady, I don't know what your purpose was, and I couldn't answer any of these quetions. I didn't feel good about it, and I am gonna call it an end." So she said, no sir, just a couple more minutes. And I replied: you said that 10 minutes ago, bye.

I hope I have good enough reasons to be rude to them. As for you, I didn't know how you are on the phone, so I can't judge you. But basically, I hate them deep into the bones. If you are actually nice to people and let go when someone says no. I will actually respect you or your kind.

Thank you. I feel so much better now.

Because people go out of their way to answer the phone - interrupting whatever they are doing - expecting the caller to be either a friend, family member or somebody with a genuine and urgent request for assistance or information. In their disappointment in discovering that it is actually someone they don't know calling for no good reason, it is unsurprising that people with short tempers may be inclined to snap.

I agree, I only worked that job for two weeks before I had had it. I don't yell or scream at telemarketers, sometimes I strike up a convo hehe or If I really don't have the time I will let them know that I am going to hang up so that they don't have to waste their breath. I know that you are not allowed to hang up without trying to make that sale.
