It sounds like something is loose inside the dryer. If I stop it and then turn it back on, the sound goes away, but after a few minutes, the rattling comes back. It's gotten progressively louder. I have a Whirlpool stacked washer/dryer and the dryer is front loading.

You have hard rubber wheels in the back side that the drum turns on==could be a bad drum wheel. Inside the dryer drum--there are a couple "vanes" ==sorta like paddles==these are screwed to the drum. Sometimes change(money) can get inside the vane and rattle around as the drum turns. you also get "fuzz balls" inside along with the pennies, dimes, etc. that sometimes will cushion the money and you will not hear anything for a while perhaps. Also the lint filter in front>> might have a hole in it allowing "stuff" to enter into the blower wheel causing noise as it rubs or gets "clinked" around. You work from the back side to get into it. Hope this gives you a clue to your problem. Have a good one.

spare chage or clothing that has large metal studs or attachments will make it happen sometimes. Next time you hear the noises check what items you have in it. Try running it empty, if there are still noises then there may be something cuaght between the dryer barrel and the rim. Does it have a lint filter at the back? Is there a broken stud on the lint filter clip? Have a really good look inside while it is empty, spin the barrel slowly and see what falls out.

The drum rides on an idler wheel. This may be cracked and when it is cool it holds together but when heated it expands and the crack may widen and cause the rattling. You may also have a loose panel, a worn bearing in the motor, etc. Many things can cause your problem. Hope it is a simple one. Sorry I couldn't be more definite but have worked on stacked units many times and have run into all these issues.

Usually it is caused by a piece of clothing that has a zipper or other "bling-bling" on it, which randomly hits the metal drum of the dryer.
