How do you create a virtual community? Myspace style?

Am trying to figure out how to do a myspace type site for family. They'll need password protection for uploading & emails, auto update for webpages when they update or upload info... things like that.

What do I use to do this? Like what scripts or programs? OR what can I search for to get the info. I've searched things such as "your own virtual community" "host your own myspace" "be your own server" have searched for hours and am not finding any USEFUL info.

Scripting is not really a problem but am having a hard time figuring out what kind of scripts to use. THANKS !!!!

The best way you can do this cheaply is by using PHP-MySQL. Use php as the scripting language and MySQL as the database. You'll need to host the site on a linux server which is pretty secure and very cheap. There are plenty of ISP who let you host your site with them, you may try a search on the internet.

Alternate options are ASP-Oracle/SQL server (would be 5 times costlier than the previous option).
