As others have stated, there are many different 'converters' available, some are shareware and others are straight purchase. I have yet to find a really good freeware product, but many companies offer a 'free trial' version that you can sample for awhile and see if you like it. When the version expires, you can either upgrade to the permanent version for a fee, or simply delete the program and go try a different one... One of the best converters I have found so far is at the link below, as well as the google search results. Good luck!

Acrobat Reader will not help you to do that. what you need is a good OCR program which stands for Optical Character Recognition. Some are free like Simple OCR which is a freeware program based on the WOCAR engine. It should work with any TWAIN compliant scanner. If you have a scanner, most come with OCR program, usually the "light" edition (by opposition to the full version which has to be purchased) but it should do the trick. Adobe Acrobat, which is not free by the way and is not the same as Acrobat Reader, will convert a word document into a pdf, but not the other way around.

Save as from drop down menu choose either doc. or RichText Format or whatever is nearest to your needs.
You might have to repeat and/copy into a Word document to edit depending how close to the original you get
