Forward ports - but if you have a residential class of internet access, your ISP may block things and if they won't unblock the ports you want, then you can't run the server.

Look up how to forward for your router at www.portforward.com

The ports you need to forward depend on what kind of server you want to setup. Common ones include:

80 - Web sites
25 - Mail Server
110 - POP3 server (to check mail recieved)
21 + 20 - FTP

Honestly we are all behind routers. That's how the internet works. A bunch of routers routing things around to were they need to go.
Also, make sure that the ip addressing schem is correct. Routers work on the network layer, and IP is the network layer protocal.

You have to be able to configure the router's firewall to let through the ports that your server provides service on, and you also need a static IP address. Your router, if configurable, should have a browser-based interface to it.

lwcomputing is right, but to add on to what he was saying...once the port(s) are set up, you would use the WAN IP address of the router to access the server.

you bust a hole in the router at port 80 (that tech talk)

most home routers have two different ways

1) dmz , it puts your machine in front of the router.... scarey!
2) allow some ports in to connect to certain machines on your home net.
