Whatever information they want or feel they need.

Very little, if any.

There are only so many agents to go around, and the shear volume of taps is such that unless someone becomes a specific focus of an investigation, it's unlikely that any information is kept.

But personally, I don't think that's the issue. If someone breaks into your house, and rummages around looking for something to steal, that still burglary even if they don't end up taking anything.

Breaking the law is breaking the law.

The United Sates government doesn't give a rat's a** what kind of pizza you order from the local pizzeria or which non-terrorist web sites you visit. They just can't process the enormous volume of information that's taking place 24/7 for the average citizens.

They have to focus on large money transfers (I can't speak for you, but that doesn't begin to include my checking account), international calls to known terrorist cells or terror supporting countries (nope, that's not me either) large or repeated purchases of bomb making materials (I haven't done that lately either) and, I'm sure you get the picture - most of us are just another brick in the wall. Anyway, the IRS and the census bureau know more about us then we know about ourselves!

If their surveillance captures or prevents just one nut job from killing more innocent people - bring it on.

They don't know as much as you think they should they know very little, they made so your employer could find out your medical information and medical history until the big case of hippo law came into effect so things the government wanted to do this is a to make them stay out of it. the thing is a lot of people were on disability cause the employer could find out what they wanted until this hippo law. it went to the supreme court, and hippo law was invented, but as far as them knowing what we do everyday that is impossible. They did not understand why people were on disability, so the government and the took it to the supreme court so that people could get off disabilty and now people are off disabilty and working now because of hippo. now employers can't find out your private information what you have or what you medical history is so now you can get hire they can't find out your medication or seach you or even try to play doctor thats to the hippo law things have gotten better.
