Textbook companies are secretly run by hybrid alien-humans. In a general sense they look the same, but just a little off. This causes the oddness you have noticed in textbooks. Oddly enough, they think they have really pulled it all off. They haven't absolutely the slightest clue that many people are onto them.

The people in textbooks are strange because those are the only books that the school can afford after they fund the athletic teams.

I do not know why. I was in a class where a guy did these illustrations for pay and I wish I could have asked him for you. I would imagine this is what the publishers want. I went to hear a writer talk and he said that he did not have any control of what went on the cover of his books. I would imagine this has to do with what the publisher demands.

I think hiring a good artist/illustrator costs a lot of money. That's why. Artists that didn't make it in real art go illustrate textbools.
I think American texbooks are way too diluted in contents with all those pictures. They are trying too hard at being not boring. That makes them frustratingly padded and useless.

the authors know that the kids who have to read it are going to be bored w/ it so they decided to put ppl w/ stupid expressions on their face to entertain us...the material is boring, so to spice it up, they put these pics in...
for example, in my physics book, there is a girl and her hair is a complete mess b/c of static electricity....also, there is a guy listening to a tuning fork...and he looks like a complete moron, mouth ajar, while listening for a sound...(my teachers words)...lol

Because they're trying to mimic normalcy... anytime anyone does that, it comes off weird.
In the way actors never act like real people.

Because people are strange, it's just hard to notice when you and they are always in motion.
