First off, Wal-Mart is more than just a place to start or end your career.
Do you realize that a Store Manager of a Wal Mart can make upwards of over $100,000 per year?? And that is before the incentives and bonuses that are offered. Assistant Managers start at $40,000 per year. That is well above average for a starting position with a company.
Yes - they do employ people that are semi retired, and the do employ the developmentally disabled. And yes - teens do look at it as a nice part time job. But it is a career for some, too.
Too many people look at the short side of retail. In actuality, one can make a nice living working retail if they are willing to move up within the company and are willing to relocate. And moving from a store location to a District Manager can land you at $120,000 per year (before bonuses). I wouldn't sneeze if someone offered me that for a wage.

Walmart actually destroys small towns and takes away a lot of decent paying jobs in this country.
They destroy small towns by driving all the local independent retail business owners out of business. These businesses typically would have formed a downtown or small business district that is the heart of small town America. After Walmart opens on the outskirts of a town, the downtown's turn into a desolate ghost town and those great prices you are going on about? Well they typically rise 15% or more after the competition is gone from an area.
So the area's merchant middle class is jobless, and Walmart will offer them a part time minimum wage job that you cannot hope to raise a family on. So people move to larger cities and the real estate in rural America suffers even more since the loss of manufacturing jobs in the last 20 years to companies in China and other third world nations that offer our corporations access to slave labor and no environmental controls.
Walmart can honestly be thought of as a significant contributor to the fall of our economy. All for cheap peanut butter.

How about if corporations like these supported other corporations that move jobs overseas and cause China, India, etc economy to boom and so they use more oil and that causes the demand to rise and we pay more for gas and where did your good deal go? And our jobs? I am not mad at Wal-Mart because I know they play by the rules for the most part and I know Wal-mart is not a person and has no feelings so we need to change the rules. BRING BACK TARIFFS!

I just don't want to hear you Wal-Mart supporters start complaining when your job, or your dad's job, or your brother's job moves overseas...
there are reasons the prices are so low... just be aware of the trade off...
But it's great for China...
so saying "yay Wal-Mart" is basically like saying "yay China"...

Wal Mart is getting screwed by Democrats being supported by labor unions. How nice it would be if they thought of the best interests of their constituents as opposed to unions which will soon be going the way of the dinosaur. (Bye Bye Ford)

Maybe that's why the cashiers can't even muster a "thank you" for shopping there. After enduring 10 trips around the store looking for one item while rude nasty customers clip your ankles with their carts to save a buck or two you should at least get the thank you. Also WalMart buys mostly off-shore because American products cost too much. (Darn those minimum wage laws...) While they may employ a few old people and fewer mentally challenged ones they hurt American companies and kill mom and pop businesses. I no longer shop there.

Wal-mart gives gainful employment to people who would otherwise be a tax burden on society. I think that deserves praise.

I like to shop at Wal-Mart, you get some really good prices on everthing. The people at the one that I shop at are folks just trying to make some money to support their families. The people who shop there are smart enough that they are saving money. So what's wrong with that?
