I am working on a marketing assignment about exporting the aussie meat pie to Japan; what do you think the response would be. And would there be a market? I am finding it hard to gauge a general opinion Australians from a Japanese perspective. Thanks

Maybe people would try it ... if it was advertised right - lots of Australian people in the ads, English language with a small translation at the bottom in Japanese (this applies both to TV ads and paper ads.)

When you market a foreign product, you have to sell the lifestyle at the same time!

Don't worry about the capabilities of Japanese 'toaster ovens' as someone called them, I have a レンジ - microwave + toaster + oven - and it can cook anything a bigger oven can, just maybe not a whole turkey, or multiple layers of cakes! Japanese food doesn't normally need cooking in an oven, but people usually have one for other things - cakes, toast, etc. After all, in Japan no-one NEEDS a whole turkey!

If you do try selling this pie to Japan, remember a few things;
1. lamb is available, but many people don't like the 'taste'.
2. make sure that the bigger version would fit on an oven tray the size of a microwave glass tray! Otherwise it'll be too big for the ovens!
3. make individual pies, so that students and salarymen can just stick it in the oven while they unwind, and then eat it when it's ready.
4. you'll also need to advise people on what to eat WITH their pie. Personally, I'd probably have mash and gravy with a few veg! But maybe it would be more viable to advertise your product with salad on the side...! (Mash is virtually unheard of here, and potatoes are just an occasional alternative to rice and noodles!)

I've never tried an Aussie meat pie - is it really any different to British ones? They're not popular here - I don't know if they've ever been 'marketed' properly though.....

Maybe if you advertised it at the beginning of Winter, and made it clear how warming and filling it is ...?

But I must warn you, Japan is not exempt from the 'health' brigade! And pies are among the worst foods on earth... worse luck!

Yes ppl will try it.
Meat pie is not popular very much. But one portion of Japanese seem to like it.
However, it has to be cooked a little and frozen.
Uncooked pie maybe difficult to be accepted.
Toaster oven and microwave are common in Japan. And ppl can't wait for long time to be coocked.

This pie is about 17cm in diameter /160g and sold as frozen food.

Ppl defrost with toaster oven or microwave.

Japanese adopt australian culture? hm...you have to research and know what kind of taste Japanese like. Japanese are severe for taste and quality.

You have to consider the fact that the average Japanese home doesn't have real oven, just a toster oven and a microwave. In my experience both are inadequate for heating a meat pie. Japanese folks are open to eating all sorts of food, but meat pies just don't have much "eye appeal" unlike.a nice steak, etc.

Adopt the culture or embrace the culture?

The Japanese government has not changed for hundreds of years. The general population may not ADOPT it, but most likely they will TRY it, potentially even EMBRACE it.

Check out http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060918/od_uk_nm/oukoe_uk_japan_madcow. Japanese are more willing to eat American beef. They think that Australian beef is too lean.

As far as I know from experience, the Japanese seem to embrace other cultures and anything new or different. So if the meat pies are new to them they'd definitely try them but if they are used to them they might ignore them and go for something more new and interesting.

If it is a genetically modified meat, you will not succeed. Japanese holding and respecting their own culture, hence culture related advertisements should be concentrated their own culture not through Aussies culture (what culture do you have?). Each evry copuntry has developed their own agenda for importing goods. If you follow their importing agendas, possiblities are their.
