i think advance auto will check it for free or you can reset it yourself by unhooking your battery for 5 mins if the light comes back on then you have a problem that needs to be checked out by someone

Is it on? There. You just checked your check engine light for free. If you can see it, it is working. Finding out WHY it is on usualyl costs at least the minimum shop charge, because they have to plug in the diagnostic computer. If you are lucky enough to have anhonest neighborhood mechanic who is up to date with diagnostics, the charge might be entirely reasonable, especially if he finds something wrong. If he findds something wrong, you'll have to pay to fix it and he might not make an additional charge for the diagnostics. Actually, when my check engine light came on, finding out why it was on was free. Replacing the EGR valve and associated parts cost almost $400, though. The light went off, though, and the car ran a lot better.

i went back to the dealer, i was under warranty. didnt cost me a thing. people say autozone or one of those car parts store. any garage can look i suppose. do you have your manuel? look in there first it can help you determine why the light is on. then call some shops and tell them whats going on they will probably tell you to come in.
