In the U.S. if it has a Visa or MasterCard symbol on it. You can choose credit and sign for it or choose debit and enter your pin. All ways come out of your checking account immediately. Some banks charge for pin transaction. Mine does not.

Yes they can be used like credit cards but the difference is the debit card withdraws the money out of your account right away, unlike a credit card will bill you.

yes you can ...I would suggest you have a direct deposit to your checking and savings account, and a way to check into your account from home, the account must be set up so that if you become over drawn that it will automatically supplement from your savings, one draw back of a debit card is that when you try to use it to rent a car you must have 15% over the rental fees for it to be accepted. I use my debit as a credit card and it seems to be the safest. I know my limitations and it helps me stay in check with my finances...good luck.

If your bank has set the card up like that, I know Bank of America cards can be used either way, but the money leaves your account immediately regardless. So as in the charges adding to a balance instead of subtracting from it, no.

both are different,
debit card, you must have money in your bank account, immediately the amount will be debited from your account, it is limited to that money.
credit card, you can buy upto the limit given, it is not associated with your bank account, you can pay later.
