I think what you've already said is perfectly acceptable: "Thank you for the offer, but I am no longer interested in the position."

But wouldn't it be great if you could say: "Thank you for the offer. It will be kept on file for six months..." (Like the form letters companies at least used to send in response to résumés and applications they really weren't interested in...)

Send the person who interviewed you a letter thanking him/her for the interview and the time they took out of their day to interview you. Let them know you appreciate the offer but unfortunately you have to decline the offer. Thank them for their consideration. This is the polite thing to do.

Well you have accepted the job, so its not like anything is vested.
You can write a nice letter, on formal paper, to thank them for this wonderful opportunity, but something has come along that is more of a match and advancement to your expertise.

Its not different then when they send you out a letter, saying:

"Thanks for your interest, but at this time..."

Its just now, you get to flip it back on them.

You can say that you appreciate the offer, but that you were offerred a different position before they made their offer, and continue to show that you have interest in their ideas and would like to continue to contact them should you need help...

Thank them for calling you back and politely decline the position or tell them the offer you have and see if they want to counter offer. maybe you can start a bidding war. It has been done in the past.

I think you answered your own question. I'd simply thank them for the opportunity and tell them that you regret you must decline because upon reflection you do not feel it would be a good fit. Then wish them luck in filling the position and say goodbye.

I would tell them that you appreciate the offer, but you have just accepted another job offer (even if you haven't).
