The Silk Road or Silk Route was an interconnected series of routes through Southern Asia traversed by caravan and ocean vessel, and connecting Chang'an (today's Xi'an), China, with Antioch, Asia Minor, as well as other points linking to Europe. The "Silk Road" essentially came into being from the 1st century BC.

The silk road. From its name, you could probably guess that Europe bought silk from China but other important trade items were exchanged on the road. Middlewaymen( is that spelled right?) earned profits by buying and selling at higher prices. So if a trade bought some silk at China for one dollar, then by time it got to Europe it would be like fifty dollars. Its all sixth grade social science. Memories you can't part with.
