Some changes in lifestyle before the remedies, please.

If you smoke, stop.
Do not drink alcohol.
Lose weight if needed.
Eat small meals.
Wear loose-fitting clothes.
Avoid lying down for 3 hours after a meal.
Raise the head of your bed 6 to 8 inches by putting blocks of wood under the bedposts--just using extra pillows will not help.

Here are some alternative remedies. Try any one of them depending on your preferences.

1,000 mg of orange peel extract every other day for 20 days. Look for a product standardized for a minimum of 98.5% (the highest purity) of d-limonene.

This might sound funny but when I was pregnant and had heartburn I found that orange Popsicles helped to ease the heartburn. It only seemed to work with the orange ones. You may also get some relief by drinking peppermint tea.You can also dissolve an ordinary mint ( the red and white or green and white mints) in hot water.Take care

The most immediate thing you can do is to stop drinking coffee and cola. Smoking is not good either, but that might be harder to stop. Don't over-eat. Don't lie down too soon after eating. Don't burp too much - this carries acid up with the burp.

Natural apple cider vinegar: Take one or two teaspoons of natural apple cider vinegar and raw honey in a glass of distilled water before meals to prevent heartburn. This combination also promotes digestion and neutralizes any body toxins. In case the taste of vinegar is a problem, take natural apple cider vinegar tablets and wash them down with honey water.

For heartburn, or acid reflux, a good long-term solution would be to take Acidophilus and/or other friendly bacteria daily. I find it a terrific preventative.

The only time I have ever suffered heartburn was when I was pregnant with my kids and I used papaya enzyme. I took it before meals and it did the trick for me.

Papaya enzymes - you can get them very cheap at Wal-mart and they are delicious. Or Pineapple juice - it has an enzyme in it that also stops heartburn. Oh, and you can mix baking soda in water and drink it - this also works.
