If it contains oils, they probably have gone rancid and you shouldn't use it anymore.

i don't think you should be concern with what is going on chemically. You should wonder what might happen to your lips. Chapstick is not expensive. THROW IT AWAY!
next time keep in fridge. I can imagine the amount of old germs, old lip skin, saliva, lint and who knows what else has been living and multiplying in your Smackers.

The oxygen reacts with most active ingredients... Oxidized chemicals tend to be quite different form their predecessors ;) (rust for example)
Then also sweat and other moisture infuse chemicals and change the structure of the balm.
I am not sure if any bacteria would want to eat your chapstick at all...

It's past it's expiry date!
All cosmetics have an expiry date, and probably should be used up in about a year.
Don't worry, I had the same problem. I opened up my old Lip Smackers and found them "mouldy" and smelling quite off. I immediately chucked it out, and I suggest you do the same!

It's definitely expired now. Throw it out now! Old makeup is covered in bacteria! I don't know all the rules, but most items should be thrown away after about six months. I heard that keeping some makeup in the refrigerator can keep it fresh longer!

All things have a used by date. A chapstick isn't meant to last that long as it's meant to be used on a frequent basis. I wouldn't keep using it if I were you, it's like eating expired food. Not good.

well maybe you applied your chapstick right after you eat, and the food/grease made the chapstick go bad.
Throw it away and get a new one asap.
when using a chapstick, either put it on finger and then put on lips, or wipe the chapstick after using it each time.
