Fanfiction.net is a similar site for fan stories, where the ideas and plots are original but the characters are someone else's work.
The best thing about fictionpress.com is that there are quite a few loyal users and your story will definitely be read by someone, as opposed to making your own website no one may go to. Good luck in your writing career!
