Some hospitals still put you under a general for a cesarean instead of an epidural. They will also use general if for some reason an epidural isn't taking affect.
The problem with using a general is that the father can not be in the room (at least at my hospital anyway) and there is a longer recovery time for mom before she can hold the baby.

Usually, they will do a spinal, which is like an epidural, except they don't leave the catheter in. If you were trying to deliver vaginally with an epidural already in place, and they need to do a ceserean, they will put the stronger drugs through the epidural catheter.

If there is an emergency, and you do not have an epidural in place, they will put you under general anesthesia. Or, with some doctors and hospitals, you can request to go under general anesthesia, whether it's an emergency or planned.

I had a spinal, and it went very well. Hardly any pain at all, numbed quickly, and only slight after effects (shaking and itching, which they stopped with medicine through my IV). I read a woman's posts some time ago who was put under for her c-section, because she requested it. She was terrified to be awake through it, and have to lie there in the operating room.

You can, if it's an emergency procedure. My daughter got stuck in my pelvic bones and I had to have an emergency Caesarian. But if it's one that's planned your doctor will probably recommend a local one. It's believed to be better for the baby than general and you get to experience seeing your baby right away. I didn't get to meet my daughter for over a whole day.

Only if it is an emergency C-section. With a planned C-section or even one that is not immediately emergency they can just give you a spinal or epidural. Very easy. I had 3 c-sections and they were very easy.

It depends on your situation and your desire. For a no complications pregnancy the standard practice is an epidural.

You can if you want. I think a spinal or epidural is more common though. I had a spinal.
