Hi, I have a 1996 Honda Civic LX. A few weeks back I was driving my car to work one day and my low oil light came on. I figured I could still go a few more miles on the little bit of oil my car had left. Guess I was wrong! On the way home, all of a sudden my car started knocking really bad. That night I checked the oil and it was bone dry; I filled the motor back up with oil and left it alone for the night. The next day I got up and started to head into town but my car would not start! One last thing, my car started smoking really bad when I was on the way home from work the first day! If anyone could tell me what they think is wrong I would greatly appreciate. It would also be helpful to know what new parts to buy (Crankshaft probably) and how much they would cost plus labor. Thanks! Anthony.

Simple solution "new engine", -or one from wrecked car! Smoke is probably from bad Pistions/rings! You may have ruined the camshaft bearings, or cam, - the crankshaft, oil pump, and a whole bunch of other little parts that require oil! So this one is going to require a total rebuild, (If block not ruined). Aluminum tends to roll up into a bunch of little balls when it gets too hot - from lack of lubrication!

Well Anthony!
It seems there maybe 2 Reasons !
Engine Failure : You need to get the valve's checked! I think One of the values down and out!
The other reason could be that some oil needs to changed! If you just changed then it has not reached all the parts!
But the most conclusive is the Engine!

Get it checked from a Good Mechanic
Best of Luck!

You siezed the engine you might as well get ready to do a engine rebuild. What you could try first though, is remove all the plugs and squirt a very thin penetrating oil in each cylinder. And leave it over night. Then try to start it. Be sure to put quite abit of the penetrating oil into each spark plug hole. Good luck, I hope this works for you.

If you ran it out of oil, and now it will not start, you more than likely damaged the main bearings or another component in the bottom end. You need to remove the oil pan and inspect the crankshaft and main bearings. Either way, plan on a costly repair.

That sounds pretty bad if you can hear the starter trying to start the engine like (click-click-click-click) then your engine isn't froze up and its a different problem but if you just hear (click) or even less than that than your engine is froze up in which case it is basically a 400 lb paper weight

SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAVE BLOWN THE ENGINE PROBABLY THE BEST THING TO DO IS CALL A WRECKING OR SALVAGE YARD THAT HANDLES HONDAS AND FIND OUT HOW MUCH A USED ENGINE WOULD COST AND IN MOST CASES THEY WILL INSTALL IT. BESURE TO CHECK OUT THE WRECKING YARD FOR WARRANTY AND QUALITY OF WORK. YOU CAN CALL THE DEALERSHIP AND PRICE A NEW ONE THEN APPROX.50% FOR A USED ONE.

IT SOUNDS LIKE THE ENGINE IS DONE. YOU PROBABLY BLEW THE ENGINE AND THATS WHY THERE WAS NO OIL, IT LEAKED OUT. CHECK THE ENGINE FOR CRACKS OR HOLES IN THE HEAD AND THE BLOCK. IF YOU LOOK IN THE RECYCLER YOU CAN FIND JAPANEESE ENGINES FOR AROUND 700-900 INSTALLED. THEY ARE USUALLY REALLY GOOD ENGINES.

You are a jackass to keep going when your "low oil" light came on. That is THE one thing that can keep anengine running smoothly, and you kept going. You got what you deserved.
