Hey, you still awake? This was one of my favorites from freshman English. (Poe was one sick puppy!)

We don't know what these guys' history is, but Poe thinks that Fortunato deserved some payback for something (which may have been something as small as just being more lucky or rich or whatever than the writer, we don't know), and lured him into the basement with a fine bottle of wine, then got him so drunk that he could hardly move, as he walled him in to kill him slowly.

Imagine the horror he felt as he got to that point, where he was begging for his life to an unfeeling, uncaring person.

The range of emotions in his stories amazes me. About every two to five years (around Halloween), it's worth a trip to the library to reacquaint yourself with his works.
