complementary angles total 90 degrees
x + 3x = 90
4x = 90
x = 22.5
22.5 and 67.5 degrees
---
a linear pair is the same as supplementary angles (180 degrees)
x + 8x = 180
9x = 180
x = 20
20 and 160 degrees

Complimentary angles add to 90 degrees
1st question:
a+3a=90
one angle 22.5 degrees
other angle 67.5 degrees
2nd question
linear pair = 180 degrees
a+8a=180
one angle 20 degrees
other angle 160 degrees

1) becase the measure of an angles compliment is 90-the angle you set it up like this
A=3(90-A)
you distrubute
A=270-3A
take the a to the other side by adding 3A to both sides
which gives you
4A=270
divide that by four and theres your answer.
2) a linear pair means that the sum of both the angles is 180
so you set it up like this
A=8B and A+B=180
then you substitute for A on the second equation
which gives you
8B+B=180
ad the B's together
9B=180
and divide both sides by nine
thats your answer

The first:
complementary angles add up to 90 degrees. To solve:
90/4=22.5
1st angle: 22.5 degrees
2nd angle: 67.5 degrees
As to the second, I have no idea what a linear pair is.

1) angle 1 =x
angle 2 =3(90-x)
x=3(90-x)
x=3(90)+3(-x)
..x=270-3x
+3x +3x
4x=270
----------
.....4
x=67.5
angle 1=67.5 degrees
angle2=3(90-67.5)
...........=67.5 degrees also
2.) angle 1= x
angle 2= 8x
since they form a linear pair (straight angle=180 degrees)
x+8x=180
9x=180
----------
.....9
x=20
angle 1= 20 degrees
angle 2= 180-20
............=160 degrees
hope you understand!!

1. let x= 1st angle
let 3x= 2nd angle
x+3x=90
4x=90
x=22.5
3(22.5)=67.5
The 1st angle is 22.5 and the second is 67.5
2. let x= 1st angle
let 8x= 2nd angle
x+8x=180
9x=180
x=20
8(20)=160
The 1st angle is 20 and the second angle is 160
