I baught a new house with a big back yard. Lots of space to pile up yard waste and pruning waste but I may not want it near my back wood fence or my house for sure. The back yars dementions are about 60'x75' wide. Ok thats not a huge back yard but you should have seen my last yard, it was tiny.

Examples of good locations for the pile include: Near the garden or between the garage and house. Do not locate the compost pile near a well, or on a slope that drains to surface water such as a stream or a pond. The pile will do best where it is protected from drying winds and in partial sunlight to help heat the pile. The more wind and sun the pile is exposed to, the more water it will need. Locating the pile too close to trees may also create problems as roots may grow into the bottom of the pile and make turning and handling the compost difficult.

We live on four acres here. My compost pile used to be located about 100' from the house when we horses, sheep and other livestock. But then too, it was as much manure and barn cleanings as household waste. After we gave up the livestock, I moved the pile to within 40' of the house. Closer to the garden and easier to discard kitchen waste into. Does not smell and is not a problem.

Ours is about 40' from the house. Close enough to take out kitchen vegetable scraps easily. Close enough to deter wildlife from snatching stuff from it. Far enough that it is a little bit out-of-sight. Ours has never smelled bad or anything, so I don't think that would be a factor. Our situation has worked well for the past 5 years or so.

Amy & Elizabeth has an identical theory as mine. I stay interior the city now, yet as quickly as I lived interior the country no longer in straightforward terms did I chase skunks, yet ALL undesirable critters away with moth balls. good luck.
