I have to write an essay on the following:

In a nation defined by video games, reality TV, and virtual friendships, with a White House that has perfected the art of politics as public relations, what is reality to Americans today? And did we ever have a grasp of it?

I already asked a similar question and got good replies. However, none of them really answered the second part of the question: if americans ever had a touch with reality in the first place? I think that we did have it once, before world war ii, and all these inventions like virtual video games, reality tv, etc. How about you? Can you give specific reasons for why you believe we did ever have a grasp of reality?

Thanks,
the Gibbler

well, that is a very good question, i live in canada and sometimes think the same way because i try to explain to my kids what it was like just 30 yrs ago, IE, very few microwaves, vcrs, computers, tv channels etc., so i'm not sure if we have a grip on reality these days or not because of such advances in technology.

Well I think that Most american do have a grasp of reality! We have it pretty well here in the USA--and when something REALLY HAPPENS--(twin towers or Katrina)---you see people pulling together and helping our fellow americans out. Yes there is alot of bitchin' and moaning from alot of people-but thats what gets on tv--and NOTHING ON TV IS REALY REALITY!!

I would say the answer would change depending on the generation being asked. I would say reality is the knowledge that life is work, and we can grasp that because we have to deal with it everyday.

Think back to the time of the constitution and the values that the founding fathers had. They boycotted tea, spoke their minds and created a set of values to live by. Today's politicians push a highly religious agenda, however, religion seems distorted by capitolism. Do we really want to be killing in Iraq for oil? Is it right to promote western culture to developing nations? Thats for you to decide.

No we never did have a grasp on it. We are pretending to. We need a reality check.

Reality is only a mental construct or design our brain made in order for us to recognise it, basically we create our reality( and its all relative). Everyone has their own ways to picture things :)
