Why are ancient, obsolute Leica M2s so expensive? When will the price come down for mere mortals?

Never, for they don't make them like they used too. They are not obsolete, not every one does the digital thing. They are a thing of beauty and were made for only rich mortals, well to do professionals or some lucky mortals. They were made in the day a photographer actually had to work for a living, or at least know more than he does now. I am waiting for Digital Camera's for Dummies to come out in print. I remember developing and printing my own work by hand, very little electronics then. Don't get me wrong, I am not down on the modern photographer, it was just different in my day.
