Since an angle and its supplement have to be equal to 180, you can write the equation as follows:

180 = x + (x - 38)
180 = 2x - 38
218 = 2x
109 = x

One angle is 109 degrees, and the other is 71 degrees. There's your answer! I hope that this helps you get those 10 points!!

I had to look this up on a search engine, but I found the definition of supplement: "Two angles are called supplementary angles if the sum of their degree measurements equals 180 degrees." Ok. It's been awhile since I did trigonometry.

But using simple algebra:

Let X = the measure of the supplement angle in degrees.

Let X - 38 = the measure of the second angle in degrees.

Then using the definition I found for supplements:

X + X - 38 = 180

2X - 38 = 180

2X = 180 + 38

2X = 218

X = 109

And X - 38 = 71

CHECKING ANSWER

If X = 109

And X - 38 = 109 - 38 = 71

Then plugging it back into the original equation:

X + X - 38 = 180

109 + 109 - 38 = 180

218 - 38 = 180

180 = 180

First of all, supplementary angles are two angles that add up to 180 degrees.
Let's call the first angle x. Since x is 38 degrees less than the measure of its supplement, x=(180-x)-38. This is because (180-x) is the supplement of x. Now we simplify:
x=180-x-38.
2x=180-38. Add x to both sides
2x=142. Combine like terms
x=71. Divide boths sides by 2.
Now we have x. We know that the other angle (let's call it y) is X's supplement, and that supplementary angles add up to 180. Therefore,
x+y=180.
71+y=180. Substitution
y=109. Subtract 71 from both sides.

Final answer: 71 and 109!

Two angles are supplementary if they add up to 180 degrees.
Let x be the first angle and y = the second angle
x + y = 180 ( because they are supplementary)
y = x - 38 ( because one is 38 degrees less than the other)

Subistitute y = x - 38 in the first equation to get
x + (x - 38) = 180
2x -38 = 180
2x = 218
x = 109
y = 71

Your angles are 71 and 109
71 + 109 = 180
109 - 71 = 38

Is this a triangle per chance? Is this geometry. Memorize your theorems and you will be in good shape that is the secret to that class. You will be fine. I wish I could remember, but alas I cannot, but that is what you need for the class.

Yep people are saying 180 degrees total so yes it is a triangle, but you already knew that. Work on this because you do not have them with you at exam time. Get your techniques down. Look at the ones who told you the how of this problem and not just the answer. No just plugging it in the question because you are stressed.

Mememorize those rules on flash cards so you know the why and can reason out your questions if that is how your teacher is having you do your proffs.

angle 1 = x
angle 2 = x-38

x+x-38=180
2x-38+38=180+38
2x/2=218/2
x=109 and 109-38=71

angle 1 = 109
angle 2 = 71 this is your answer

Supplementary angles total 180 degrees.

x + (x - 38) = 180
2x - 38 = 180
2x = 218
x = 109

The two angles are 109 degrees, and 71 degrees.

Total degrees of both angles = 180

180-38=142.
142/2=71 (smaller angle)
71+38 = 109 (bigger angle)

Therefore, the biger angle is 109 degrees and the smaller angle is 71 degrees. :)

let the angles be x and x+38
as they are supplimentary sum = 180

x+x+38 = 180
2x = 142
x = 71 and x+38 = 109
angles are 71 and 109
