We've tried and tried and this problem is not working. I've gotten 4, -2,and 1 and they have equaled 0 and then there was y=0. So would any of you mind helping me and my friend out? He needs it to finish his test corrections and I've tried to help him as much as I can.

((y - 2)/y) + (2/y) = (y + 1)/(y - 3)
((y - 2) + 2)/y = (y + 1)/(y - 3)
(y - 2 + 2)/y = (y + 1)/(y - 3)
(y/y) = (y + 1)/(y - 3)
1 = (y + 1)/(y - 3)
y + 1 = y - 3
0y = -4
y = -4/0
y = Undefined

The problem cannot be solved.

I have two software packages

Mathematica comes up with "(1+y)/(-3+y)
and Derive 6 comes up with "(y + 1)/(y - 3) = 1" and than simply states "FALSE"

Your Anser is: (y-2)/y + 2/y =/= (y+1)/(y-3)

There is no solution...
(y-2)/y + 2/y = (y+1)/(y-3)
multiply by (y-3)
(y-3)((y-2)/y + 2/y) = (y+1)

y-3 = y+1
=> -3=1

Hmm... I've tried this solution on a piece of paper and have enquired my mum who is a math teacher is a high school. There is no definite answer for this question. Are you sure something isn't missing?

(y-2)/y + 2/y = (y+1)/(y-3)

combine the left side
(y - 2 + 2) / y = (y+1)/(y-3)
y/y = (y+1)/(y-3)
1 = (y+1) / (y-3)
y+1 = y-3
no solutions possible.. are you sure the question isnt missing something?

the closest i can get is y=7.77 and then it is 1.8117=1.83857, but if you are rounding then u get 1.8 but I don't know bout this stuff
