Gerbil, Hamster, Rat, Mouse...Along the small animal line.
I'd love to consider lizards and other misc. reptiles; unfortunately, I've got to have some affection back from this pet or I'll go nuts.
I have some information and facts on each, but your personal opinions from experiance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. :)

I have had two pets that are just about perfect!
1. Have had hooded rats, males are better than females, biting and possessive issue. The males are silly, loving , liter box trained, and a good all around friend to talk to and to snuggle at night with.
2. My Ball Python, she is sweet and full of affection ,She kisses my temples every time I take her out of her aquarium.
I know when she wants to eat , play, or be held. by her body motions.
Georgie doesn't bite, bark , and only sheds in her aquarium!

Gerbils, Hamsters and Mice generally do not like to be held. Rats are very affectionate and will actually seek out human companionship.
Those all require about the same as far as maintenance.

Im not usually a cat person but they are the lowest maintenance animal (provided its one with short hair) to keep that will give you love and affection in return.

You dont have to bath it, if its toilet trained well, there's no litter to change, you only have to feed it.

all the pets you mentioned will have a considerable amount of cleaning maintenance involved.

There housing will need to be changed and cleaned regularly otherwise there will be a bad odour and can lead to the pets developing diseases and spreading germs. Even fish will need their tanks cleaned out quite regularly.

hope this helps

I believe the best low maitenance pet is a hamster. I own four of them. They don't eat and drink much and you don't have to do anything with them. You have to clean the cages at least one to two times a week but that's really simple just dump it and put fresh bedding in. Plus the best part is they are so cute and cuddly.

Out of those 4 a rat will probably be most affectionate. All are about the same maintenance wise..

Don't know what would be good for you, but Guinea pigs take a lot of special daily care to keep them healthy. Mine are all over 6 years old.
