i'd like to think I have enough sense to understand and not get my hopes up if you did it politely. No reason to hurt anyone worse than necessary, just make sure everything is clear, and don't drag it out, do it quickly and cleanly.

Bluntly and politely.
I have to imagine that this guy is someone you must have cared about (to some degree) and should deserve some measure of politeness and civility (unless he did something heinous). It needs to be spelled out in no uncertain terms and that it is for good.
To be rude would be just rubbing salt into the wound. Plus you might turn a potential friend or ally into an enemy. Who needs that?

If it was me I would want to be let down bluntly with nothing being held back. When people skirt around their true feelings it creates a sense of false hope. Though the persons feelings may be hurt in the immediate, it will save much heartache over time when you have to continually let them down, or break up.

Umm... bluntly and politely I guess :S I wouldn't misunderstand things if you speak CLEAR. Tell him clearly that you don't want anything with him, but do so in a polite way, you don't have to be rude.

that would depend on how serious the relationship was. if it was a good time while it lasted and it was seriously going to work at one time, go with blunt and polite. don't say anything but what really needs said, that way there is no misunderstanding.

Be kind, and be compassionate, but be honest. You have to find the words to say. I am sorry, I know we have had something special, but for me that is gone.
When he protests, and he probably will, gently touch his arm and using his name (as this truly personalizes it) _____, I'm sorry, it is over for me, and I want to move on without this hurting either one of us anymore than it has to. I will always think of you fondly and remember how special you have been. But we are just not meant to be. Kiss him softly on the cheek and walk away. Even if he is calling after you, just keep walking. Do not look back. Looking back always gives false hope. You realize of course you will break his heart, but better to do it now, than after 5 years of an unhappy marriage. Tread lightly- and maintain your dignity and composure, even if he loses his. Good luck.

Would you rather be shot in the head or killed with toothpicks???
Fast, hard, violent! Just go for the throat and make him hate you. It's the only way.

Be direct and honest, but whatever you do,
DON'T tell him: "You're a good guy; you'll
meet someone someday". --- That is so
much condescending creipolla. Just stick
a dagger in his heart and move on.
